Union Pacific's Build America Campaign
Union Pacific Railroad (UPR)
Large Format 3M High-Visibility Reflective Decals for Locomotives
Project Overview:
In response to the national sentiment following 9/11, Union Pacific Railroad (UPR) launched the “Building America” campaign in 2001. A key component of this initiative involved applying large reflective American flags to both new and existing locomotives across their fleet. INPS played a crucial role in this patriotic endeavor, providing specialized installation services across multiple locations in the United States.
Challenge:
INPS was tasked with the removal, supply, and installation of large vinyl American flags on 2,500 locomotive vehicles, including various models from GE and EMD. The project involved not only initial installations but also the replacement of damaged flags as needed. Given the operational demands of the rail industry, INPS often had a narrow 3-hour window to complete installations, typically while locomotives were being fueled and serviced at Union Pacific’s facilities.
Materials:
High-quality 3M vinyl materials were used for all installations, ensuring durability and visibility. The decal area for each locomotive was approximately 400 square feet.
Solution:
Through the Building America Flag Program, INPS successfully contributed to UPR’s vision of promoting national pride and unity. The large reflective flags on UPR locomotives have become a symbol of the railroad’s commitment to America, visible across the vast network of tracks that span the country.
